Aug. 18th, 2008 @ 10:42 pm Apartment Management Turnover
Attitude: frustrated
Yep. Apartment management changing hands... AGAIN.

To a court-appointed third party, no less. No, I don't know why. The new lady in the office (who, like all the ladies before her, was not given any system access to computer or phones and must now wait for higher ups to reset the systems...) explained that they expect to hold the property for about 2 to 6 months.

What the hell? These are beautiful apartments. They are very old (by the city's standards), so maybe the maintenance bills are intimidating? I know the first thing this new management did was run Radon tests.

The lady in the office was also scandalized that we pay our own water bills... but these apartments were built with individual meters.

Maybe it has something to do with what the postman and I were chatting about one day... there's no sense of community here anymore. Me and one elderly gent I think are the last of the tenants who have held residency for more than a year. There's no more cookouts, no more hanging out on the front steps in the twilight hours... This is a booming transient city made of college and military, but no bohemian sense of community.

So anyway... *HEADTHUNK*

Attitude: amused
Quoted from a 4th season episode of "Reba" in which Van tells his lesbian agent Sadie that Reba is "Super Gay". Reba clears the air just before a "date" can occur, and we get the following:

Sadie: Oh, so you're not "Super Gay".

Reba: No. I have no powers of gayness whatsoever.

Now, keep in mind I didn't witness any of this, I only heard about it from several sources.

Yesterday, a shoplifter managed to make off with about 5k in tools, so today obviously our managers were a little wary of suspicious behavior.

This guy comes in today, and while over by the tools is almost purposefully avoiding store employees. He then makes motions like he was hiding things in his pants. Now, we found out later that he didn't actually take anything, but nonetheless store procedure is that if you suspect some one of shoplifting you keep an eye on them until they leave the store and report it. So Don, the manager in m department, and Ben, a zone manager, kept an eye on him. At one point before leaving the suspect shouted at them asking if they wanted to check his pockets. Now, keep in mind they DECLINED to search him or detain him in an manner.

After he got home, this man called our corporate headquarters and complained that he was accused of stealing, held against his will, and publicly searched. Now, doing ANY of these is grounds for reprimand according to Lowe's customer service policy, so it's very VERY unlikely that a pair of mangers would do it. Not to mention the security cameras right over the registers would have shown if they had. So apparently corporate did nothing.

So instead he decides to try his luck by calling OUR STORE and demanding we compensate him with free gift cards.

Kim, the MOD at the time, flat out told him no and hung up.

I almost wish I had been at work earlier to see all this.

Aug. 16th, 2008 @ 08:15 am Half the fun is the classic Hollywood setting...
And now, a joint release from the "Unnecessary Marketing" and "Ow! Right in my Nostalgia!" departments:

Hasbro is updating Clue for the 21st century. Now it's set in a modern mansion with all the amenities like a spa and a home theater. Classic characters like Col. Mustard, Prof. Plum, and Mrs. White are gone, replaced with a former football player, a dot-com millionaire, and a child star, respectively. Even some weapons are changed around! The revolver is a pistol, for example (because a revolver wouldn't work?)

Why?

"We wanted something that the mom or dad who's bringing home for the family [could say], 'This is what I remember, and this is what I want to play with my kids.'"

Except it's not what I remember, Hasbro. So I won't be doing that. And since my kids won't remember it, they won't do it in the future. See how this might kill your boardgame?

I think someday, I am going to look back on this month and think "dear god, how did I survive?"

This week has been nuts. Last week was just hard on me, probably because the wedding was so awesome that I kinda fell into post-con depression. I ended up setting up the last bits of the reception hall myself minutes before the wedding started, and then played runner the entire time. And if you think that's bad, my friend Jon burned two tanks of gas in two days from all the delivery driving he did.

I hate the overcast, 60 degree summers here.

This week has been a buildup to and execution of a telephone system upgrade. For the record, taking a search and rescue/emergency station's telephones offline? Good times.

HQ also wants the fiscal year's budget spent NOW, so that's not helping matters.

If that wasn't enough, I leave the state and the military in three weeks. I expect to devolve into cryptic, emo LJ posts at any moment, and maybe develop some sort of nervous twitch. I just got blood taken for the physical today, and gave my landlord my last day. Still have to train the new guy, pay all my bills, cancel all my services, clean the place, update my ribbons, get and sign my orders...

Yeah.
What about that?

I am morbidly amused.

"Please. Language is not to be taken lightly. The seat of my power lies in the ability to twist words as one might a nipple. English has unparalleled flexibility in this aspect. Not like a gymnast, limber and spry, but rather a broken man, shattered beyond discernible anatomy. Granted sufficient commas, one may knead English - not unlike bread - into dulcet harmony, or the keening tones of children, as they weep for the last time."

And now the legend himself, Isaac Hayes, is dead at the age of 65. Supposedly they found him unconscious next to a running treadmill. I know he had suffered strokes earlier in his life.

The man was a gifted, talented singer, songwriter, and composer who helped to define an entire genre of music. There were few voices like his, even when he was playing Chef on South Park. He was also a Scientologist, and I personally believe one of the examples of how Scientology handlers rather insidiously control their 'flock.'

Nonetheless, he'll be missed.

Random ten songs, from Winamp. Just because I'm bored and need to post more.

Yael Naim - Far Dar
Tom Petty - I Won't Back Down
Ayo - Watching You
Esperanza Spalding - If That's True
Dean Martin (w/Kevin Spacey) - King of the Road
Billy Joel - Get It Right the First Time
Federico Aubele - Pena
Harry Belafonte - Jump in the Line
Spectacular Spider-Man - Theme
Patton Oswalt - America Has Spoken (also known as a failure pile in a sadness bowl)

I do actually have things to post. Family photos and such. As well as some good news.

But I'm not sure I should post the good news. I had good news before, and I didn't post about it or talk about it too much, and it led to the current even better news.

I'd hate to jinx myself.
